My 13th Blogiversary

My thirteenth blogiversary was this past Saturday, April 5th. I had a busy weekend, plus I'm currently under the weather, so here is my blogiversary post a couple days late.

I began this blog on April 5, 2012 after watching Lisa Louise Cook's live streamed February 2012 RootsTech presentation called Genealogy Podcasts and Blogs 101. I had never heard of genealogy blogs before and the thought of blogging about my ancestors had never even occurred to me before that time. I decided to be brave and jump into the genealogy blog pool and here I am today thirteen years later. I'm grateful to Lisa for her presentation and to RootsTech for live streaming it.

THANK YOU

Thank you to my wonderful readers for taking the time to read my posts and for leaving comments over the years. I appreciate your support very much!

My 10th Blogiversary

Oops! I missed my 10th blogiversary. It was actually on April 5th.

But in my defense, my mind was focused on traveling to attend my BYU-Idaho college graduation, which was held last week on April 7th. I'll share a blog post about that in the near future.

Wow! I can't believe it's already been ten years since I began this blog. I really haven't posted many blog posts since last year's blogiversary. Hopefully, that will change now that I've graduated from BYU-Idaho.

THANK YOU

My 7th Blogiversary...Belated

I just realized that I actually missed my blogiversary this year. Oops! It was on April 5th. How is it possible that my blog is already seven years old? It's hard to believe. But, I really am glad that I began this blog on April 5, 2012. It's been a fun and rewarding way to share my family history.

So much has happened in our family since my last blogiversary in April of 2018. It mostly centered around caring for my Mom, who was diagnosed with Dementia, most likely Alzheimer's, in November of 2017. It was heartbreaking to watch her decline throughout the year. On October 27, 2018 she passed away and is now free from pain and suffering. I like to think about how happy my Mom and Dad must be to be together again.

There were also happy times in our family during 2018: spending time with family, vacations, celebrating birthdays, etc. We also welcomed our fifth grandchild into our family in 2018. She's absolutely adorable! We love her and all of our grandchildren so much.

THANK YOU

Thank you to my wonderful readers for taking the time to read my posts and for leaving comments over the years. I appreciate your support very much!

My 6th Blogiversary

Wow! It's already been six years since I began this blog. Where has the time gone?

VERY BUSY TIMES

Unfortunately, I haven't published many posts since my 5th blogiversary last year. It's been very busy around here lately. We've been settling into our new home, and it's still not all done. But, we're making progress. Here's a photo from when we moved in.

And here's a photo of what that same area looks like today. Hurray for progress!

In the second half of 2017 we celebrated the births of three grandchildren. Yay! And, in early November, our oldest son and his beautiful bride were married and sealed for time and all eternity in the LDS Oakland California Temple. Later in November, we held a wedding open house for them at our home. We also helped some of our kids with moves earlier in the year.

We also are helping my elderly mother and making sure she is well taken care of where she lives. The concern and responsibilities regarding my mother's care and health have continued into this year.

We've had a mixture of happy, exciting, and fun times, along with stressful, worrisome, and sad times since my last blogiversary.

THANK YOU

Thank you to my wonderful readers for taking the time to read my posts and for leaving comments over the years. I appreciate your support very much!

Celebrating 5 Years of Blogging

Wow! It's my 5th blogiversary! I've been so busy with everything around here that I actually forgot about it until I saw some kind congratulations on Facebook.

THANK YOU

I'd like to thank you, wonderful readers, for taking the time to read my posts over the years. I'd also like to thank you for your comments and for sharing my posts on social media. You guys are awesome!

BUSY TIMES

Unfortunately, I haven't been posting as much on my blog this past year as in previous years. Last year was an incredibly busy and eventful year in our family. Two of our children got married, we bought a new-construction home, put our old home on the market, sold it, found a rental home to live in while our new home was being built, moved to our rental home, and then moved to our new home a couple of weeks ago.

We are still in the process of unpacking. This photo was taken almost a week ago. I was actually able to unpack several of thosee boxes and the pile was getting smaller. Unfortunately, the pile has grown again since we moved boxes inside from the garage last night. Sigh....It will be so nice to finally have everything unpacked. It really takes a lot of time to find new places for everything after moving to a new home.

So, with all that's been going on, something had to give, and that something was writing in my blog. Once things settle down and I get back into a somewhat more normal routine, I will hopefully get back to blogging on a more regular basis.

Celebrating My 4th Blogiversary ~ What An Amazing Four Years It's Been!

Wow! It's already been four years since I started this blog. Seriously, time has just flown by. So many amazing things have happened since I pushed the publish button on my first blog post four years ago.

Blogging has enriched my life in so many ways and has provided me with many wonderful and exciting opportunities.

Here are some highlights from last year.

Blog Book

I created my first blog book using Blurb.com and on April 14, 2015 I shared my excitement about receiving my blog book in the mail in my post My Blog Book is Here!

New Website

I decided to create a website using Weebly.com. It's basically a site to share the many places I can be found online. I wrote about it in my post My New Website.

Presenter

On Saturday, May 16, 2015, I taught a class at our local "Discover Your Family Day." I wrote about that in my post My "Family History Blogs and Social Media" Class. I've also taught that class at two other Family Discovery Day events and I'm scheduled to teach it at the Fresno Genealogical Society monthly meeting in June.

Official Blogger

In May of 2015 I received an email inviting me to be an official blogger for the BYU Conference on Family History & Genealogy, which was held July 28-31, 2015. That was such a delightful surprise. What an honor to be invited to this event. I wrote about it in my post Official Conference Blogger ~ 2015 BYU Conference on Family History & Genealogy.

RootsTech 2016 Ambassador

In the fall of last year, I received another exciting email. This time it was congratulating me on the fact that I was selected to be a RootsTech 2016 Ambassador. What an honor! On September 17, 2015, I wrote about it in this post RootsTech 2016, Here I Come...As an Ambassador!

Meeting Fellow Genealogy Bloggers

I've met so many wonderful people in the genealogy community both online and in person. Attending the BYU Conference on Family History & Genealogy and RootsTech 2016 gave me the opportunity to finally meet genealogy friends that I had only known online.

Tweets by RootsTech and FamilySearch

I was thrilled and honored that RootsTech and FamilySearch shared a couple of my blog posts on Twitter. So cool!

I was especially flattered by the very nice compliment by RootsTech at the bottom of the tweet above.

FamilySearch Blog Included My Tweet

I was flattered and excited that one of my RootsTech tweets was included in the article RootsTech 2016 Recap: Tweets Tell the Story of this Amazing Family History Event. This article appeared on the FamilySearch Blog on February 12, 2016.

Brief Appearance in the April 2016 LDS World Report Segment About RootsTech

The other day my husband got a text from a friend telling him that he saw me in the World Report between General Conference sessions. We were watching General Conference on BYUtv and missed the April 2016 World Report. Thank you Eric for the heads up! In the World Report, there was a segment about RootsTech beginning at the 38:30 mark in the video. I can be seen sitting in the Media Hub inside the Expo Hall.

Thank You!

Thank you to my husband and family for supporting me as I share my family history through blogging.

Thank you to my wonderful readers, for taking the time to read my posts, liking and sharing my posts on various social media platforms, and for leaving comments. I appreciate all of you!

Thanks for reading!

My 3rd Blogiversary!

at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Yesterday, April 5, 2015, was my blog's 3rd blogiversary. I can't believe I began this blog three whole years ago! Where has the time gone?

FIRST THINGS FIRST

First of all, I would like to thank all of my wonderful readers for following along with me in my family history research. I appreciate you reading my blog posts. I also appreciate your comments and sharing my blog posts on various social media sites. Thank you!

YEAR IN REVIEW

A lot has happened since April 5, 2014. I shared some of these events here on my blog.

On August 12, 2014 I announced the exciting news that I became part of the new "May I Introduce To You" (MIITY) team at GeneaBloggers. We have a fabulous team and it's wonderful working with them. Thomas MacEntee introduced the new team members on his GeneaBloggers website.

On September 3, 2014, I shared the wonderful reason I added another name to my genealogy database. Our second-oldest son got married to a beautiful young woman. She's awesome and we're so happy she's now part of our family.

On November 3, 2014, I told you about the fabulous surprise I received in an email. A gentleman named Carl found me because I'm a contributor on Find A Grave. He had a copy of a letter written by my paternal 2nd great-grandfather, Iver Iverson, who served in the U.S. Civil War. Carl shared that letter with me, and I shared it in my blog post.

On January 5, 2015, I shared the reason I added a sweet little leaf to our family tree. My husband and I became grandparents for the first time in November 2014. Our daughter and son-in-law welcomed a sweet little baby boy into their family. He's so adorable!

On January 26, 2015, I shared the exciting news about a new cousin connection. This cousin lives in Brazil and is a very close cousin that our family knew nothing about until he contacted me.

On January 13, 2015, I told you about how my blog and I were mentioned and quoted in an article on the FamilySearch Blog. I was so surprised by this and still am. It also turns out that this same article was published in an article in The Church News  on January 16, 2015 on lds.org.

On March 31, 2015, I ordered my first blog book for this blog. I got an email today saying that it has shipped! Yay! The book covers the first three months of my blog: April - June 2012. I wrote about my blog book and shared some pages from when my book was a work in progress in my blog post Fab Finds on a Brief Hiatus.

STATISTICS

As I've done with previous Blogiversary posts, I'm sharing some of my blog stats again this year. I'm only sharing the stats from Google Analytics though. These statistics are for the year April 5, 2014 - April 5, 2015.

Acquisition Section

These are the Sources/Medium Traffic Charts. According to Google Analytics, this tells me the following:

"Source/Medium describes where your traffic comes from. The Source is the place users are before seeing your content, like a search engine or another website. The Medium describes how users arrived at your content."

This is the Referral Traffic Chart. According to Google Analytics, this tells me the following:

"The sources which referred traffic. Includes sources identified via utm_source."

It's so interesting to me that Pinterest is one of the leading referring sites for my blog. If you haven't used Pinterest yet for your genealogy blog, I highly recommend you give it a try.

Audience Section

Did you know that Google Analytics can even tell you the top ten browsers your readers use? I found this information in the Technology section.

And from the Mobile section, here are the top ten mobile devices used by my readers.

Thank you again to my family, friends, fellow genealogy bloggers, and anyone else who takes the time to read my blog posts, leave comments, and share my posts on social media. I appreciate it so very much.

Thanks for reading!

It's My 2nd Blogiversary!

Happy Birthday Cake - from Microsoft Office free images

Wow! Is it really my 2nd blogiversary already? Time has flown since I started this blog two years ago.

First of all, I want to thank all of you, my wonderful readers, for taking the time to read my blog posts.

Writing a blog isn't always easy and it does take time and effort. But the benefits far outweigh the costs.

BENEFITS AND BLESSINGS OF BLOGGING

The thought that someday my future grandchildren may read about their ancestors on my blog is exciting. It makes all of the time and effort I put into writing my blog worth it. I hope that my blog will bless the lives of my descendants.

One of the benefits of writing my blog is that I've come to learn about my ancestors as I write about them. They were real people with real lives. They were much like you and me. They had their likes and dislikes. They loved and were loved. They endured hardships and had trials of their own. It's an honor, a blessing, and a privilege to write about them. Each of our ancestors deserves to be remembered.

Cousin Connections and Vintage Postcards

Another blessing of writing my blog and having my family tree online is that I've made cousin connections.

A 2nd cousin on my dad's side recently found me on WikiTree.com and contacted me by leaving a message on my blog's Facebook page. I'm now part of his family history group on Facebook, which is awesome!

Another cousin, this time on my mom's side, found my blog and then left a message on my blog's Facebook page.

Another possible cousin contacted me by leaving a message on my blog's Facebook page. We've sent messages to each other several times. It looks promising that she is a descendant of my 2nd great-grandfather's brother, Ole Iverson, who was from Norway.

And just last night I had a new cousin connection. I received an email message through WikiTree's private message system. This new cousin found her grandmother's memorial page on Find A Grave, which I am maintaining. I sent her an email and am now awaiting her response.

And, of course, I can't forget the exciting Engle Family Postcard Adventure that started on November 11, 2013. A very kind woman named Ann, who lives in Ireland, came across some vintage postcards that were sent to my 2nd great-grandaunt, Sarah Amanda (Waterman) Engle. Ann purchased the postcards, found me connected to this family by doing an online search, and left a private message via WikiTree's message system. Because of Ann, I'm now in possession of over 50 of these amazing vintage postcards from the Engle family. And I'm in the process of sharing them here on my blog. If you would like to read more of this story, click HERE.

In addition to cousins finding me through WikiTree, my blog, and Find A Grave, I've also had cousins contact me because my family tree is on Ancestry.com. I have found that it's been very beneficial to have my family tree online.

STATISTICS

Statistics can be quite interesting. Last year on my 1st blogiversary I shared some of my blog stats. I thought I'd do so again today.

Referring Sites

These are the top ten referring sites to my blog according to Google Analytics.

Google Analytics Sources for Jana's Genealogy Blog from April 5, 2013 through April 4, 2014

These stats are from April 5, 2013 until April 4, 2014. Of special interest to me is number four – Pinterest. That really has been a surprisingly big referrer to my blog. Also, thank you Randy Seaver, author of Genea-Musings, John D. Tew, author of Filiopietismprism, and Cyndi's List for referring traffic to my blog as well!

These are the top ten referring sites according to Blogger.

Bogger Referring Sites to Jana's Genealogy Blog - All Time Stats dated April 4, 2014

Unfortunately, Blogger doesn't have the capability to limit these statistics within certain dates like Google Analytics does. So, these stats refer to the entire time I've had my blog. Pinterest is at number ten in this list.

It's My 1st Blogiversary!

Slice of Birthday Cake with Candle - from Microsoft Office free images

It's time to celebrate!  Let's bring out the cake and ice cream and light the birthday candle!  My blog is turning one year old tomorrow, April 5, 2013. I would have posted this one-year anniversary post on my actual blogiversary, but I already have my weekly Fab Finds post scheduled for that day. So, I'll just celebrate a day early!

Has it really been one year since I started this blog? I can't believe it! Where did the time go?

First of all, I want to thank all of you, my wonderful readers and fellow genealogy bloggers, for your kindness and support.  It can be a scary and intimidating thing to start a blog and "put yourself out there" on the web.  But you've been so very welcoming and supportive and I want to thank you for that.

And I would be remiss if I didn't give a huge thank-you to Thomas MacEntee at GeneaBloggers.  He is a wonderful mentor and advocate for genealogy bloggers everywhere.  Thank you Thomas for creating GeneaBloggers.  It's such a friendly, supportive and welcoming community.

In the past, I've seen other genealogy bloggers share their blog stats on their own blogiversaries.  I thought I'd do that as well.  It's interesting to analyze the blog stats, although I don't know just how accurate they really are when I take into account possible spam hits to my blog posts.

Nevertheless, the stats will hopefully give a pretty good overall picture about my blog and what my readers have enjoyed reading.

I compared my Blogger stats with my Feedburner stats and they are not the same.  And I'm not sure why.

According to Blogger, my top ten most popular posts are as follows:

  1. Follow Friday–Fab Finds for December 28, 2012
  2. Follow Friday–Fab Finds for January 18, 2013
  3. Follow Friday–Fab Finds for September 14, 2012
  4. Follow Friday–Fab Finds for March 29, 2013
  5. Thanks for Traveling Frederick! - U.S. Consular Registration Application ~ 1917

  8. Follow Friday–Fab Finds for March 22, 2013
  9. Ancestor Landing Page ~ Debs Webster Family Immigration Story
  10. Treasure Chest Thursday–The Big Reveal ~ What's In The Old Metal Tube?

According to Feedburner, these are my top ten posts:
  1. Follow Friday–Fab Finds for March 22, 2013
  2. Will You Be Watching?
  3. My 4th Great-Grandfather's Signature on a Revolutionary War Document ~ Dated August 23, 1776

  5. Tech Tuesday - OneNote For Genealogy ~ Research Bookmarks
  6. Tuesday’s Tip ~ Three Awesome Websites for Genealogy…Found on Pinterest!

  8. Military Monday ~ Revolutionary War Surgeon: Luther Waterman
  9. Tech Tuesday ~ Watermarked Photos
  10. Follow Friday–Fab Finds for November 23, 2012

In the Blogger stats, my Fab Finds posts dominate the top 10 spots, but in Feedburner, they don't.  I wonder which one is more accurate.

Something else I found to be quite interesting were the referrals.  Here's a sample from Feedburner:

Feedburner Referrer Stats for Follow Friday Post as of April 3, 2013 Cropped

See what's at the top of the list?  Yep, RebelMouse!  What a surprise!  And RebelMouse was the #1 referrer in eight of my top ten popular posts in Feedburner's list.  RebelMouse was the #3 referrer for the other two posts.  Wow!  I have to admit to being quite shocked at this finding, especially since I've only been using RebelMouse for a short time.

Here's what Blogger shows as my top ten referring URLs and referring sites:

Again, I don't know why these are different from Feedburner.

It looks like GeneaBloggers, Sepia Saturday, Genea-Musings, Twitter, and Facebook are in the top ten list of my referring URLs and referring sites in Blogger's list.  Thank you
Thomas MacEntee at GeneaBloggers, Randy Seaver at Genea-Musings, Sepia Saturday bloggers, and all of those who have used Facebook or Twitter to access my blog!

Okay, enough with the stats…let's have some cake!  But, before we dig in, I want to thank you all again for taking the time to read my blog this past year.  And thank you to those who've left comments, "liked" my blog posts on Facebook, "+1'd" them on Google+, retweeted them on Twitter, or shared them through any other social media platform.  You guys are awesome!

Thanks for reading!
