Those Places Thursday–Webster Family Road Trip: South Dakota ~ The Badlands National Park

This is part of a series of posts dedicated to the immigration story of Debs Webster and his family.

Well, Debs Webster and his family are heading west.

In today’s world of Interstate Highways that sounds like a simple thing right?  But not so much in 1952.  Interstate 90, which would be the logical route they would have taken, didn’t exist until 1956.

The Webster family left Illinois, traveled a great distance, and entered the area known as The Badlands of South Dakota.

Maybe it was the name “Badlands,” or the eerie landscape, or the thought of the wildlife in the area such as rattlesnakes, bobcats and coyotes; whatever the reason, the family was so scared of this place that they slept in their car!

No camping out of doors for them!  And this wasn't tent camping either.  Nope!  This was sleeping in a sleeping bag under the stars camping.

I don’t think I blame them for sleeping in their car either.  What about you?  Would you camp outside, under the stars, along a lonely road in The Badlands of South Dakota in 1952?

Check out the video above and the photos below before you decide.

Rugged beauty? Yes! Kind of scary at night by yourselves? Absolutely!

The next stop on the Webster’s trip is a visit to Mount Rushmore.

Workday Wednesday–Arthur's On the Job! ~ Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of Arthur’s On the Job!  If you missed Part 1, you can read it by clicking HERE.

Arthur was an excellent mechanic.  And as my regular readers know, even the famous Clark Gable sought him out when he brought his car to the garage where Arthur worked.

As promised, here is another photo of Arthur at work (and yes, this is another photo from my Grandma Ingrid's Books of Remembrance) -

Arthur Harry Iverson
I thought it would be nice to post some close-up views of the above photo, so here they are.

First up is my Grandpa Arthur.

And next is some kind of Kwik-Way equipment in the shop.  I did a Google search and found Kwik-Way’s website.

Not being a mechanic myself, I can’t really tell what kind of Kwik-Way machinery is shown in the photo or what my grandpa is holding in his hands as he works on that old car.  Any guesses?

Kwik-Way Equipment
So, that’s it for now.  I’ll share another photo of Arthur at work in the next installment of Arthur’s On The Job!

Thanks for reading!

Sepia Saturday 141–Timeless Treasures ~ Grandma Ingrid’s Books of Remembrance

Sepia Saturday provides an opportunity for genealogy bloggers to share their family history through photographs.

The Sepia Saturday photo at the end of this post shows an old country store.  The photo provides a variety of themes we Sepia Saturday participants could write about this week.  The potential theme was “time and time again.”  I’ve decided to tweak the theme a bit and share with you two timeless treasures in our family.

These timeless treasures are my Grandma Ingrid’s Books of Remembrance.

My father, Jan Albert Iverson, inherited his mom’s (my Grandma Ingrid's) genealogy “stuff” after she passed away.  Among those items were two Books of Remembrance.  I discovered these timeless treasures not too long ago while I was over at my mom’s house.

Following the death of my dad in 2009, I started doing research on his side of the family.  He was researching his family lines and I’ve been researching my mom’s side of the family.  Now I have the privilege of researching the ancestry of both of my parents.

Grandma Ingrid’s Books of Remembrance are chock full of photographs, documents, pedigree charts, family group sheets, written life stories, and more!

You can imagine how absolutely thrilled I was as I perused the contents of these timeless treasures.

I’ve already shared with you a photo from the pages of the Aqua Book of Remembrance in my previous post Workday Wednesday–Arthur's On the Job! ~ Part 1.  And I’m looking forward to sharing many more photos and the stories that go with them from these amazing books.

Timeless -- ageless, everlasting, eternal…yes these Books of Remembrance truly are Timeless Treasures to the descendants of Ingrid Gilberg.

Thank you Grandma Ingrid for taking the time to create these wonderful books.

If you have the time, please click HERE to see what other Sepia Saturday participants have taken the time to write this week.
