December 4 – Christmas Cards

Did your family send cards? Did your family display the ones they received? Do you still send Christmas cards? Do you have any cards from your ancestors?

My parents did send and receive Christmas cards.  And they were displayed in our home.  As you can see from the photo below, one of the ways my mom displayed them was by attaching the cards to a ribbon which was then attached to the wall.

I don’t display my Christmas cards the same way my mom did, but I have kept up the tradition of sending Christmas cards to family and friends.   Lately though, I’ve started sending those fun Christmas photo cards from Costco instead of traditional Christmas cards.  I also include a Christmas letter updating the happenings of our family.

You could say that my Grandma Ingrid sent a type of photo Christmas card as well in 1939.  Here is a cute little Christmas card I found in one of my Grandmother Ingrid’s Books of Remembrance.  Pictured are my Grandpa Arthur and Grandma Ingrid Iverson with their three children.

At this special time of year when we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, I'd like to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas!

Thanks for reading!

  1. One of my friends runs a ribbon around the doorway between her foyer and living room where she attaches her cards. When I was a kid, I was in charge of running a string along the banister of the stairs. I attached cards with little tiny clothespins. Now I just put all the cards in a bowl or basket in the livingroom. Boring, I know.

    1. Hi Wendy,

Now that tiny clothespins idea is super cute! And if you're boring, then I guess I am too. I also put the cards in a decorative container on my bookcase shelf.

Thanks so much for reading and for your comments! I really appreciate it!

  2. We do try to send Christmas cards. Some years we are better at it than others. And my husband is much better at it than I am.

As for display, I've always used the fireplace mantel for cards. Some years, I've strung the cards on ribbons above the fireplace. When I redesigned my mantel I first used cards to fill in the center picture frame area. Now, I just display them across the mantel itself.

The cards are frequently so beautiful that they really help dress up the room. Especially before the tree is up!

I love the idea of using the fireplace mantel for displaying your Christmas cards.

  3. Love this post and enjoyed the Iversons' card! I still send a modest number of Christmas cards and enjoy receiving them. My family always has. I display them on a fireplace mantel, and I like your idea of a decorative container. I used to send an annual letter but stopped doing so after use of social media made it easier to keep in touch. Still, I may send a decorative electronic letter this year...

  4. What a nice picture of your family's Christmas card display...and I love the tinsel on the tree. My parents used to hang it on our tree, too, but I haven't seen tinsel for years.
